Mr. Her
GVHS Course Description for Advanced Placement Studio Art: Drawing:
“Recommended: Teacher recommendation. Carries extra grade point and AP designation. AP Art enables highly motivated and talented artists to complete college-level work while in high school. Student evaluation is based on an extensive body of artwork that addresses three major concerns: quality of work; concentration in a particular visual interest; and breadth of experience in individual expression using technical and formal processes. Graduation fine art credit, CSU/UC “f” requirements.”
Instruction on proper methods of creating art and use of art media will not be taught in AP Art. It is the students’ responsibility to have a strong foundation of art practice before enrolling in the course. The teacher’s role in this course is to assist students in following a strict time schedule, to give professional advice regarding artwork, and to facilitate creative discussion regarding portfolio pieces.
Expectations of all students:
The class period contains four levels: AP, Art 4, Art 3 and Art 2. (It would be ideal to have one course taught during one period but due to enrollment, this is not possible.) All students are advanced level during this period and are expected to bring to the class a degree of expertise and maturity. AP students will use the majority of the class time to work on their portfolios while Art 3 and 4 students will have more teaching time with the instructor. All students are expected to participate in classroom critiques and discussion of their own and each others’ artwork.
Homework:
It is expected that AP students spend extra time outside of class working on their portfolios. Class periods are only 53 minutes long so time should be spent wisely.
Late work:
We have a deadline to meet for your portfolio submissions. There cannot be late work.
Supplies:
Portfolio pieces can be created in any media and the art department has a wide variety to choose from. Most art supplies are consumed each year and cannot be re-used. Canvas and canvas board can be re-used; therefore if you wish to use canvas or canvas board, you can purchase them through the art department.
Grading:
The AP Drawing Portfolio’s are scored on a scale of 1-5. Scores of 3 and above are passing scores. The following website: www.collegeboard.com offers detailed descriptions of each score as well as detailed information about the course. We will be using the College Board AP score sheet to critique artwork in class. The same scoring guide is used to give final scores on quarter work. Artwork is due at the end of each quarter completed. Artwork will be turned in one week prior to the due date for comments and suggestions. Each work of art will earn a score of 1-5.
Grading Scale:
100-90=A
89-80=B
79-70=C
69-60=D
59-Below=F
